Experimental Drug Reduces Weight in Obese Mice

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University report that an experimental substance called C75 has demonstrated appetite-suppressing effects and led to rapid weight loss in obese mice. While promising, further research is needed to evaluate its safety and efficacy in humans.

However, an apparent advantage of this molecule is that mice with normal weight return to regulate their appetite one day after starting treatment, while the drug continues to act in those rodents that are obese.

The molecule causes weight loss by blocking an enzyme involved in energy storage. Lean mice regain their normal appetite after a day of treatment, but obese mice do not become resistant to the drug until they have lost significant weight.
