September 23rd marks the Day of the Resident Doctor, a figure that encompasses the health professional who is passing through a crucial stage in their theoretical-practical training. The objective of this date is to make visible the role of an essential piece in patient care.
The date was chosen in honor of the birth of William Halsted, co-founder of the first residency in history at Johns Hopkins Hospital (USA).
Residencies are traditionally hospital systems, and in the mid-20th century, participants often lived (or “resided”) in the hospital.
