“Let’s act now. Let’s act together. Let’s invest in neglected tropical diseases” is the motto proposed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for the 2023 edition of the world day of these pathologies, which is commemorated every January 30.
“On World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day 2023, PAHO calls on everyone, including leaders and communities, to confront the inequalities that drive NTDs and make bold and sustainable investments to free the disease. cycle of poverty to more than 1,000 million people who live in the most vulnerable communities and are affected by NTDs,” indicates a PAHO statement.
From the organization they explain that NTDs are a diverse group of 20 conditions that are widespread in the poorest regions of the world, where water security, sanitation and access to medical care are poor.
They highlight that neglected tropical diseases are preventable and treatable when detected early. Access to clean water, safe food handling, good hygiene and reducing environmental risks contribute to preventing NTDs. Delay in seeking treatment and care can result in lifelong disability and death.
The region of the Americas has been a pioneer in the world in the elimination of communicable diseases, in general, as well as in the elimination of neglected tropical diseases such as onchocerciasis, trachoma and human rabies transmitted by dogs. The successful elimination experiences in the Americas have generated important lessons learned whose application will contribute to the achievement of the goals established for 2030.
When supported and protected, community health workers can provide effective health services, especially to marginalized groups.
