UK Initiative Aims to Develop Vaginal Gel for HIV Protection

The UK has initiated a five-year program in five African countries to develop a vaginal gel or cream that can effectively prevent HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases. This effort represents a significant step toward combating the spread of HIV/AIDS globally.

The British Department for International Development is sponsoring the project with $23 million in South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Cameroon and Zambia.

The Secretary of State for International Development, Clare Short, declared that it is necessary to "increase the range of products available that provide women with the ability to protect themselves against HIV in ways they can control. An effective microbicide, which can be affordable by countries poor people, it would be immensely useful.
