Environment Day 2023 Focuses on Plastic Pollution

“No Plastic Pollution” is the motto chosen for the 2023 edition of World Environment Day , a date established by the United Nations to highlight that the protection and health of the environment is an important issue that affects the well-being of people. and economic development throughout the world.

The topic was chosen in a global context in which more than 400 million tons of plastic are produced each year, of which half are designed for a single-use useful life. It is also estimated that less than 10% is recycled and that between 19 and 23 million tons of plastic waste end up in lakes, rivers and seas each year.

Likewise, microplastics (plastic particles whose diameter is less than 5 mm) invade food, water and even the air , the United Nations warned.

The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental policy, with the first major conference on environmental issues, known as the Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHN), or the Stockholm Conference. Later that year, on December 15, the General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/2994 (XXVII)) designating June 5 as World Environment Day and urging "Governments and organizations of the United Nations system to undertake, every year, on that day, global activities that reaffirm their concern for the preservation and improvement of the environment, with a view to deepening ecological awareness.
