SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is here to stay, but the world is beginning to emerge from the emergency phase of the pandemic. This was stated by the director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The official said in a briefing that the UN agency will next week publish guidance for countries on how to move from an emergency response to long-term management of COVID-19.

"We are hopeful that at some point this year we will be able to declare the end of COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern," Tedros said in statements cited by Reuters.

"But this virus is here to stay and all countries will have to learn to manage it along with other infectious diseases," he declared.
